CECHAP Director participates in international workshop in Hong Kong

On April 2, Cynthia A. Sanborn, director of the Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies at Universidad del Pacífico, participated in the international workshop “China and the World: China’s Role in Global Governance and International Development Cooperation”, organized by the Centre for Sustainable Development Studies (CSDS) at Hong Kong Baptist University and co-sponsored by the Ford Foundation Office in Beijing, China.

The main objective of this event was to debate China’s changing role in global governance and international development cooperation. Likewise, the topic of sustainable finance was addressed in the context of global economic governance, from the perspective of China and Asia. There was a diversity of participants, from academia, public policy, business, and civil society, from China, across Asia, and the United States.

Professor Sanborn was the only representative from Latin America, and she provided observations on the impact of mineral extraction on local communities in this region, as well as sharing the work of CECHAP on China and sustainable development more broadly.   In her comments, Sanborn discussed the unequal impacts of past mining booms in this region, and also noted that although demand has risen for minerals critical to global energy transition, Latin America´s mineral exports also supply traditional industry and construction around the world.

Among the notable speakers in this workshop were ZHA Daojiong, Peking University; CHENG Yuk-shing, Dean and Director of CSDS, and ZHANG Chuanhong of China Agricultural University. Also participating as panelists were: BEI Duoguang, Chinese Academy of Financial Inclusion; LIANG Hao, Singapore Management University; ZHANG Bohui, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen; CHIU Tzu Kuan, Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance; Maud SAVARY-MORNET, Global Impact Investing Network Hong Kong; LI Fusheng, New Century Academy for Transnational Corporations; LIU Jinlong, Renmin University of China; and LI Xia, from the Foreign Environment Cooperation Center of Ministry of Ecology and Environment.
