This book explores what development banks, governments and communities have learned in the last decade about the implementation of social and environmental protections in investment projects in the Amazon and the Andes, and also about the pressures of an incipient infrastructure and development boom.
Here the development of the aforementioned social and environmental protections in financial entities that work from and for the South is traced, after years of struggle on the part of the affected communities and their defenders. The analysis goes beyond official policies to discover how these measures work in practice and, ultimately, if they are enough to stop the risks of mega infrastructure projects. This publication shows that making infrastructure work for everyone involved requires mutually reinforcing networks of support and accountability among communities, governments and development banks.
This book, edited and written by an international multidisciplinary team, will be of considerable interest to researchers in the fields of development and development economics, geography, anthropology and ecology, as well as to practitioners in development banks and government regulatory bodies and foreign aid agencies.
