Bryan Andia participates in the III Graduate Student Congress on Asian Studies with a presentation on hedging in Southeast Asia

On August 7–8, 2025, the III Graduate Student Congress on Asian Studies was held, organized by the Center for Asian Studies of the Universidad Católica de Chile.

In this international gathering, Bryan Andia, affiliated researcher at the Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies (CECHAP), participated in Panel 5, titled “Estrategias de protección internacional”, held on August 8.

On this occasion, Andia presented his paper “Hedging en los estados pequeños del Sudeste Asiático”, which is part of his graduate thesis research. In his presentation, he explained how the concept of hedging has become increasingly relevant for analyzing the ways Southeast

Asian countries respond to the strategic rivalry between China and the United States. This approach looks to go beyond traditional realist frameworks in International Relations, such as balancing and bandwagoning, which are often insufficient to explain the strategic flexibility of these states.
