CECHAP and NRGI co-organize conference with Dr. Jewellord Nem Singh

On April 7, the conference “The Business of the State and Resource Governance” was held, organized by the Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies (CECHAP), in collaboration with the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI). The event served as a platform to discuss the critical role of states in the sustainable management of natural resources and featured the participation of leading experts in the field.
The keynote presentation was delivered by Dr. Jewellord Nem Singh, Principal Investigator at the School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex, United Kingdom. Dr. Nem Singh presented the main findings of his book “Business of the State: Why State Ownership Matters for Resource Governance,” published by Oxford University Press. His presentation offered an in-depth analysis of mining governance and state-owned enterprise reforms, drawing on ten years of fieldwork in Brazil and Chile.
Commentators included Dr. Barbara Stallings, professor at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University (USA) and visiting professor at the Schwarzman Scholars Program at Tsinghua University (China), and Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, Global Leader of Climate and Energy Practice at WWF and former Minister of the Environment of Peru. Both provided valuable reflections and complementary insights to the main presentation.
This conference reaffirms CECHAP and NRGI’s commitment to promoting informed debate on strategic issues for sustainable development.
