CECHAP Participates in the 3rd International Symposium on Green Future and Shared Civilizations between China and Latin America

On Friday, July 4, 2025, the 3rd International Symposium on China–Latin America Green Future and Sharing Civilizations was held at the Colégio Brasileiro de Altos Estudos of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). The event was co-sponsored by UFRJ, the Universidad Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), Renmin University of China, and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies (CECHAP) had a prominent participation in the event.

Cynthia Sanborn, Director of CECHAP, was part of the panel “Green Economy and Energy Transition”, where she delivered a presentation titled “Latin America, China, and the Challenges for a Just Energy Transition.” Her presentation addressed the challenges faced by primary-exporting countries in our region within the global context of energy transition, engaging with the cooperation and investment processes promoted by China. This presentation was delivered within the framework of the Just Energy Transition Project (JET) , developed by CECHAP with the goal of generating knowledge and fostering dialogue around policies aimed at maximizing the benefits and minimizing the risks of the green transition led by China.

The symposium, held under the theme “Green Development and Sharing Civilizations – New Opportunities for Cooperation between China and Latin America,” brought together scholars and representatives from public, private, and multilateral institutions from various countries to discuss sustainability, green economy, agricultural trade, and forest protection in the face of climate change.

CECHAP’s participation reflects its commitment to interdisciplinary research and the creation of multisectoral dialogue spaces on the impacts of the energy transformation in both regional and global contexts.
