Cynthia Sanborn Participates in the “Global (Dis)Order: The Global South and the Transformations of World Order” Program in Brazil

On December 4 and 5, 2025, Dr. Cynthia Sanborn, Director of the Center China and Asia-Pacific Studies (CECHAP), took part in the international session “Global (Dis)Order: The Global South and the Transformations of World Order,” a program organized by The British Academy in collaboration with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. This year’s edition was held in Rio de Janeiro and hosted by the Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV). The event convened intellectuals, diplomats, and other decision-makers from Europe and BRICS member countries to reflect on the evolving world order and the increasing role of the Global South in contemporary geopolitical reconfiguration.

Throughout the program, panels addressed topics such as multipolarity and global governance toward 2050, the future of BRICS, transnational illicit flows, climate governance, and international financing. Discussions examined structural challenges for Latin America, as well as opportunities to strengthen its global engagement amid shifting power dynamics. Notably, the session featured Ana Toni, Executive Director of COP30, who shared key outcomes and pending challenges from the climate summit recently held in Belém.

Dr. Sanborn opened the session titled “How US–China Rivalry Constrains the Global South,” which explored the implications of strategic competition between the two major powers for emerging countries.

The Global (Dis)Order international policy program, launched in 2024, is a joint initiative of The British Academy and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace aimed at generating new perspectives and critical thinking for professionals and policymakers.

CECHAP’s presence in this forum helped consolidate academic ties with research centers across the Global South and strengthened exchanges on strategic issues related to international governance, the Asia-Pacific, and comparative politics. Participation in this program reinforces the institution’s commitment to critical analysis and to advancing a regional perspective within global debates.
