From October 10 to October 14 2024, Mario Chong, a researcher affiliated with the Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies, participated in the China-Latin America and the Caribbean Cooperation for Development Conference in the cities of Beijing and Hangzhou. This event, organized by the Center for International Knowledge on Development (CIKD), brought together leading representatives of various entities to promote dialogue and cooperation between China, Latin America and the Caribbean.
The main focus of the conference was the development of a global knowledge network, focusing on South-South integration and confidence building in the macro-region. During the first session, “Cooperation in Agriculture, Mining and Infrastructure,” opportunities for collaboration in these vital sectors were discussed, with an emphasis on sustainability and regional development. This was followed by the “Cooperation in the Global Value Network and Energy Transition” session, which explored ways in which countries can integrate into global value chains and move towards more sustainable energy sources. Finally, the session “Development in China and the Americas: Global-South Cooperation” addressed the role of China and Latin America in the context of South-South cooperation, highlighting the mutual benefits that can arise from these partnerships.
The event was attended by representative organizations from China and Latin America, including the China Society of Cooperative Economics, the International Cooperation Department of Americas and Africa, the Bank of China, the Foreign Economic Research Department, and Beijing Foreign Studies University, among others. Also present were key institutions such as CAF (Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean), SELA (Latin American Economic System) and IDB (Inter-American Development Bank).
