Nifta Lau, CECHAP researcher, participated in the Chinese Malls Research Workshop 2024

On December 11 2024, Nifta Lau, researcher at the Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies (CECHAP) participated in the Chinese Malls Research Workshop 2024, organized by the Nucleo Milenio ICLAC, the Chilean Asian Project, the Observatory of Consumption, Culture and Society (OCCS) of the UC School of Communications and the UC Center for Asian Studies, at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. The event was held at the Faculty of History, Geography and Political Science of the university.

Lau participated in the panel entitled “Chinese Malls: Santiago, Ñuble, Lima”, in which the characteristics and particularities of Chinese malls in the cities of Santiago, Ñuble and Lima were discussed. This panel allowed an enriching exchange of perspectives among the experts present, highlighting the similarities and differences in business models and social dynamics in each region. Lau, together with Joaquín Peláez and Zuleyde Castro, students of Law and Administration respectively, from the Universidad del Pacífico presented a paper entitled “Social dynamics and economic competition in the Chinese trade zones of Lima, Peru”, in which they shared their research on the different Chinese trade zones that have been developed to date in the city of Lima: Chinatown in downtown Lima, and the districts of San Borja and La Victoria.
