Nifta Lau participates in the 4th Tsinghua Area Studies Forum in Beijing

From July 2 to 4, 2025, Nifta Lau, researcher at the Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies (CECHAP), participated in the 4th Tsinghua Area Studies Forum, organized by the Institute for International and Area Studies (IIAS) of Tsinghua University in Beijing. Under the theme “Beyond Regions: Emerging Issues and New Visions for the Global South”, the forum brought together leading scholars from around the world to exchange ideas, research methods, and methodologies in field studies, fostering a deeper and more comparative understanding of development and governance challenges across the Global South.
Participants shared ideas and research results focusing on topics common to various regions such as Southeast Asia, South Asia, Eurasia, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as Latin America and the Caribbean.
Within this space, Nifta Lau participated in Panel 3, focusing on “Social Development and Governance Challenges in the Global South”. As part of the subpanel “Development and Governance Challenges in Comparative Perspective”, she presented her paper entitled “Rethinking the impact of Chinese investments in infrastructure in Latin America and the development of local communities”.
During her stay in China, the researcher also held academic meetings at other key institutions, including the School of International Studies and the Institute of New Structural Economics (INSE) at Peking University, as well as the Center for China and Globalization (CCG).
For the CECHAP, this participation represents a valuable opportunity to strengthen academic ties with world-renowned institutions, enrich the Center’s research agenda in the international debate on the Global South.
