Omar Manky, CECHAP-Affiliated Researcher, made an Academic Trip to Japan

Omar Manky, affiliated researcher at CECHAP, undertook an academic visit to Japan in January 2025 at the invitation of Nagoya University. During his trip, he participated in key events at Doshisha University (Kyoto) and Nagoya University, addressing critical topics such as social conflict, agro-exportation, and human capital development.

On January 21, at Doshisha University, he presented the lecture “The 2020 Agrarian Strike: Social Conflict and Political Representation” at an event organized by the Latin American Studies Center. This session featured prominent academics from various Japanese institutions, including Kyoto University, Ritsumeikan University, and the Institute of Developing Economies. The event fostered an exchange of perspectives on agrarian conflicts in Latin America and their global significance.

On January 23, at Nagoya University, Manky participated in the roundtable discussion “Are Gen Z Ready to Help Build an Alternative Future?” organized by the Graduate School of International Development. Alongside experts such as Christian Otchia, Sanae Ito, and Isamu Okada, he analysed the role of youth in political transformation and resistance to autocratic regimes.

Beyond these events, Manky highlighted the enriching interactions with academics and students from various regions of Asia and Africa, allowing valuable exchanges on Latin America from an Asian perspective. He also emphasized the need to strengthen long-term collaborations with Japanese institutions, moving beyond individual conferences toward more sustained academic partnerships.

This visit reaffirmed the significance of collaborative efforts between Latin American and Asian researchers, opening new avenues for comparative studies on shared challenges and the development of international cooperation networks. In addition to enhancing the partnership between CECHAP and these prestigious Japanese universities, the visit further positioned CECHAP as a leading institution in knowledge exchange, research, and the internationalization of Universidad del Pacífico.
