Omar Narrea participated in the International Conference “The Port of Chancay as a Strategic Platform: Perspectives from Peru, Ecuador, and China for Regional Development”
On October 22, 2025, CECHAP researcher Omar Narrea participated in the International Conference “The Port of Chancay as a Strategic Platform: Perspectives from Peru, Ecuador, and China for Regional Development”, organized by Red de Innovación y Cooperación Académica Ecuador-China (REDICEC), a network for academic cooperation between Ecuador and China.
The purpose of the academic meeting was to analyze the role of the Port of Chancay as a strategic infrastructure for Latin American regional integration and development, through a space for academic and diplomatic dialogue among experts from Ecuador, Peru and China.
The conference featured the participation of various institutions, including the Embassy of Ecuador in China and the Consulate General of Ecuador in Shanghai. From Peru, the Consulate General of Peru in Shanghai, Universidad del Pacifico and Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. From China, the Fudan Development Institute of Fudan University and the H&W Law Firm Group of Shanghai. The conference was moderated by Adriana Chavez, coordinator of the Social Sciences and Foreign Trade Thematic Group of REDICEC/Shanghai University.
The conference was structured into four thematic panels. Researcher Omar Narrea participated in the first panel, titled “Megaprojects and Regional Governance: Can Chancay Articulate an Andean and Latin American Vision of Development?”. In his presentation, Dr. Narrea highlighted the role of the Port of Chancay as a new logistics hub for the west coast of South America. He then analyzed the economic corridors toward the Pacific Ocean and explained the transpacific Chancay-Shanghai route. He also presented the West Coast South America (WCSA) port network, which will be integrated with Chancay, strengthening the exports to Asia and promoting intra-South American trade through feeder routes. From an Andean and Latin American perspective, he emphasized that Peru has consolidated its position in high-value markets, especially in the fruit sector, and that one of the main challenges will be to attract investment in high-value-added activities that generate employment and promote productive diversification.
At CECHAP, we celebrate and value these spaces for dialogue and academic cooperation, which foster collective reflection on the challenges and opportunities of regional development. The participation of our researchers in international forums reaffirms the Center’s commitment to knowledge generation, academic exchange, and the strengthening of ties between Latin America and Asia.
