Omar Narrea, researcher at CECHAP, participates in the Chancay Port Oversight Commission at the Congress of the Republic of Peru
On Monday, September 30, Omar Narrea, a researcher at the Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies, made a notable contribution during the sixteenth regular session of the Special Multilateral Commission on the oversight of the Chancay megaport in the Congress of the Republic. Representatives from Cosco Shipping Port PERU S.A., the Ministry of Transport and Communications, and prominent academics were invited to discuss the current progress of the project. Omar Narrea was invited in his capacity as a professor at the Universidad del Pacífico and researcher at the Center.
During the session, Narrea presented his latest publication titled “Towards Industry 4.0 around the Chancay Port: Lessons from Economic Corridors in China, Malaysia, and Thailand.” His presentation addressed the role of the Chancay port as a catalyst for economic transformations, the importance of Asian economic corridors for diversification and value chains, opportunities for transformation towards Industry 4.0, and the challenge of competitiveness in the industrial corridor. Narrea concluded that the transformation towards a 4.0 industry must be thought of from the perspective that Peru not only needs private investment but also requires public infrastructure that favors the growth within cities. In this context, a pressing issue is to integrate the bypass project of Chancay-Chancayllo with the urban development plan of Chancay.
The Terminal Multipurpose Port of Chancay is 93% complete. During the session, officials from Cosco Shipping reported that a trial operation test has started after receiving a ship carrying empty containers and another with maintenance equipment. It is expected to have the terminal ready for inauguration in the month of November. The commission is set to conclude its functions by October 20, and a potential extension will be evaluated.
