Second Webinar organized by Universidad del Pacifico and Indonesia’s Binus University

On Monday November 11, the second part of a series of conferences organized jointly by Binus Business School and Universidad del Pacifico was held. During this opportunity, the webinar “Lessons from Chinese Family Businesses Emigrating to Southeast Asia and Latin America: The Case of Indonesia and Peru” was presented. The meeting was also attended by the Ambassador of Peru in Indonesia, Ambassador Luis Tsuboyama, who celebrated the academic exchange between the universities.

During this second session, Dr. David Wong, professor at the Universidad del Pacifico, explored the phenomenon of minority economic dominance through the example of Chinese diasporas, comparing their impact in Indonesia and Peru. Chinese communities, although small in population, have established significant economic influence in several countries. The session focused on why Indonesian Chinese, who represent only 2.8% of the country’s population, control about 80% of private assets, while the Chinese community in Peru, though similarly small, has not achieved comparable economic dominance. This difference was attributed to the formation of the “bamboo network” in Southeast Asia, a network through which Chinese migrants shared business information and forged a collective economic strength.

During INALAC-2024 in September, the INALAC Society Forum resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Universidad del Pacifico and Binus University of Indonesia. This webinar series represents the first inter-university collaboration following the signing of this agreement. Following the completion of this series, it is expected to continue fostering academic and cultural exchange between the two institutions, promoting joint research and mutual learning on topics of global and regional relevance.
