Universidad del Pacífico and Fudan University Establish an Alliance for New Pathways for Academic Cooperation between Asia and Latin America

  • The agreement will promote international mobility, foster joint research, and advance new academic initiatives between both institutions.

On December 10, Universidad del Pacífico (UP) signed an institutional agreement with Fudan University, one of Asia’s most prestigious academic institutions, with the aim of strengthening academic cooperation, joint research, and international mobility. The signing ceremony took place at UP’s President’s Office and brought together senior authorities from both universities, including the official Fudan delegation led by Xin Qiu, Chairman of Fudan University Council.

The relationship, initially promoted by the Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies (CECHAP) at Universidad del Pacifico, was consolidated through a coordinated institutional process between the two universities. Through this alliance, UP opens new opportunities for students, faculty, and researchers, reaffirming its commitment to an approach to internationalization that not only expands horizons but also builds meaningful and lasting relationships with strategic partners around the world.

A Visit That Paves the Way

The Fudan University delegation was composed of high-level academic and administrative representatives: Xin Qiu, Chairman of the University Council; Li’an Lu, Director of the Office of Global Partnerships; Lijian Sun, Director of the Financial Research Center at the Fudan Development Institute; Yu Zheng, Professor and Head of the Department of International Politics; Xian Xu, Professor and Vice Dean of the School of Economics; and Shan Niu, Program Manager at the Office of Global Partnerships.

During their visit to campus, the delegation engaged in close dialogue with UP’s senior leadership, sharing institutional priorities and exploring areas of convergence for future joint initiatives. A tour of the facilities allowed them to gain first-hand insight into UP’s academic infrastructure and spaces dedicated to research and innovation. Beyond formal presentations, the visit was characterized by an atmosphere of genuine interest and a shared willingness to build a sustained, long-term collaborative relationship.

Mobility, Research, and New Academic Projects

The signed agreement establishes a broad framework for the development of joint initiatives in key areas for both institutions. The main areas of cooperation include:

  • Exchange of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Periodic faculty mobility and opportunities for joint teaching.
  • Organization of seminars, conferences, and non-degree academic courses.
  • Development of collaborative research projects between departments and research centers at both universities.
  • Exchange of publications, academic materials, and digital teaching resources.

In addition, this general framework allows for the development of specific memoranda for academic programs, interdisciplinary projects, and research initiatives, ensuring a flexible, dynamic collaboration aligned with the expectations of both institutions.

Purpose-Driven Internationalization

The signing of the agreement with Fudan University—ranked among the Top 3 universities in China by Times Higher Education and among the world’s top 30 universities according to the QS World University Rankings—is aligned with the objectives of UP’s 2025–2029 Five-Year Strategic Plan, which recognizes internationalization as a key pillar for consolidating the institution’s academic leadership. Through this alliance, UP expands mobility opportunities, promotes the generation of knowledge in areas of global relevance, and strengthens its positioning within an increasingly interconnected academic environment.

Moreover, collaboration with Fudan enhances other core dimensions of UP’s institutional strategy, such as globally oriented education and active participation in international academic networks, enabling the university community to benefit from experiences, perspectives, and learning opportunities that enrich both academic and professional development.

“This alliance with Fudan University reflects our conviction that internationalization is a key tool for strengthening academic excellence, broadening horizons, and generating new knowledge. We want our students and faculty to develop a global perspective that contributes to transforming the country and the region,” stated Martha Chávez Passano, President of Universidad del Pacífico.

With this agreement, Universidad del Pacífico reaffirms its commitment to establishing strategic partnerships that expand its international presence and strengthen learning, research, and professional development opportunities for its community. Collaboration with Fudan University represents a significant step in building academic bridges between Latin America and Asia, and consolidates the path toward a more global, integrated, and impact-oriented university.

Within this framework, the Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies (CECHAP) has not only promoted this relationship from its inception, but has also been actively engaged in academic exchange with Fudan University. In recent years, CECHAP has hosted Fudan professors and doctoral scholars for conferences, seminars, and research stays, while also sending Universidad del Pacífico faculty and specialists to participate in academic activities, courses, and research meetings in Shanghai. This prior dynamic of collaboration reflects the strength of the existing relationship and provides a solid foundation upon which this new agreement will further expand, institutionalize, and project academic cooperation between the two universities.
