As part of the 29th Lima International Book Fair (FIL 2025), Omar Narrea, researcher at the Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies, participated in the panel “China’s Influence on the Peruvian Economy”, held as part of the Café Dominical discussion series organized by El Comercio.
Narrea joined Luis Miguel Castilla, Director of Videnza Instituto and former Minister of Economy, and Edgar Vásquez, Director of theCentro de Investigación de Economía y Negocios Globales (CIEN) at the Asociación de Exportadores del Perú (ADEX) and former Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, in analyzing China’s growing presence in Latin America and its impact on Peru.
In his remarks, Narrea emphasized that China is no longer merely a low-cost supplier; it has moved up the value chain, becoming a leader in innovation and securing key positions in global supply chains, including sectors like electric vehicles. He also highlighted the strategic importance of the Port of Chancay as a key logistical hub in this new phase.
He further pointed out that although China holds only 3% of the world’s copper reserves, it consumes more than 50% of global copper production—explaining its strong interest in Latin America as a source of critical raw materials.
The panel agreed that Peru’s relationship with China will continue to deepen, but warned that the country must diversify its export offerings, modernize its legal framework, and strengthen its technical institutions to avoid overreliance on primary goods.
