China’s Enterprise Reform and Internationalization with Reference to the Economy of Peru. In International Conference: Reform and Internationalization of Chinese Companies and Relations with Latin America and Peru
Description:
This publication is part of “Reform and Internationalization of Chinese Companies and Relations with Latin America and Peru,” an international conference held by our center with the cooperation of the Association of Chinese Companies in Peru in December 2017. It details the research of Professor Liu Guy, Ph.D., Senior Professor and Director of the United Kingdom Campus at Peking University HSBC Business School. In his presentation, Professor Liu explains that the Chinese business sector, and state-owned companies in particular, is currently undergoing a stage of change. This is salient in light of China’s present context of slowdown. The privatization of state-owned companies is also noteworthy given the influence this process has on the decision-making of the main stakeholders in China’s business community. Privatization-oriented reform intersects with other problems such as workers’ compensation or China’s unequal business ownership pattern: state-owned companies account for 1% of companies but control 30% of all assets. With regard to the challenges this fourth reform of state-owned companies entails, the professor cites five key areas: (i) the mixed ownership of certain companies, (ii) changes to corporate governance, (iii) cuts to productive overcapacity, (iv) internationalization, and (v) anti-corruption campaigns.
