Japan’s Trade Strategy in the 21st Century and Economic Partnership with Latin American Countries Revisited
Description:
This publication, from the Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies conference paper series, documents a presentation given by Professor Watanabe, who holds licentiate and master’s degrees from and undertook Ph.D. Studies at Sophia University of Tokyo, at the international conference of the same name held by the center and the Embassy of Japan in Peru in August 2018. Professor Watanabe focused on the impact of Brexit and the United States’ trade war on Japan. Dividing the world economy into three mega-regions (Asia, the Americas, and Europe), he discussed market integration in each.
He also described the interregional cooperation frameworks that link these markets, and their possible consequences for the World Trade Organization (WTO). The professor noted the free trade areas in which Japan participates with economies in Asia and beyond. In addition, he remarked on the commercial impact of the Trump administration, and the Japanese reaction. The paper ended with an explanation of the strengthening trade relations between Japan and Latin America by way of Mercosur and the Pacific Alliance.
