This book explores what development banks, governments, and communities have learned in the last decade about the implementation of social and environmental protection as part of investment projects in the Amazon and the Andes, and about the pressures of a nascent infrastructure and development boom. It traces the development of the aforementioned social and environmental protection in the case of financial entities that work from and for the South, after years of struggle on the part of the affected communities and their champions. The analysis goes beyond official policies to shed light on how these measures work in practice and, ultimately, whether they do enough to stop the risks posed by mega-infrastructure projects. It shows that making infrastructure work for all concerned requires mutually reinforcing networks of support and accountability between communities, governments, and development banks. The book, written and edited by an international multidisciplinary team, will be of considerable interest to researchers in the fields of development and development economics, geography, anthropology, and ecology, and to practitioners at development banks, government regulatory bodies, and foreign assistance agencies.
