Study and workshop to understand the role of digital connectivity in the formalization process of informal businesses in the Asia-Pacific region

Description:

Informality is a complex, structural and persistent phenomenon in the major APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) economies. Promoting the formalization of informally operating enterprises has received widespread attention in recent years. In that sense, addressing the formalization process of informal enterprises influenced by digital connectivity can become a useful tool. There are few studies on how digitalization can promote the formalization of informal businesses. Our study aims to contribute to the advancement of this phenomenon by exploring the transition to formality, specifically focusing on the role of digitization as a new variable that disruptively marks a new perspective to successfully accelerate and incentivize the formalization of informal businesses in the digital connectivity environment. Likewise, we seek to understand the causal relationships between digitalization and the factors that influence the behavior of enterprises, such as their resources, capabilities, external factors and institutions, allowing us to design more effective strategies to boost formalization in business.
