Understanding the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative: Renewing China-Latin America´s Economic Cooperation?

Description:

We at the center argue that the Belt and Road (BRI) Initiative has progressively become a global initiative for China. A sign of this is the invitation made by President Zi to the countries of Latin America to take part in the initiative. Our task is to strengthen understanding of the strategies involved in this participative endeavor and to identify its advantages and risks. One key concept worth noting is connectivity (by land and by sea). That said, the initiative cannot be reduced to mere investment in infrastructure. Another fundamental element is the economic corridors.” Peru’s participation in the “Belt and Road” initiative should encompass ways of working on the five pillars together rather than any one in isolation. More accurately, the BRI is more of a comprehensive program of economic integration. On this basis, the article proposes a strategic vision for Peru and Latin America.
