This first publication in the UP Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies conference paper series presents the keynote address delivered by one of China’s leading economists, Professor Zhang Jun, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Economics and Director of the China Center for Economic Studies at Fudan University, considered among the best universities in that country. Professor Zhang Jun was the keynote speaker at the International Symposium “The Transformation of the Chinese Economy: Four Decades of Reforms and Internationalization, and What Comes Next?” held by our center at UP’s Juan Julio Wicht auditorium on August 20, 2019. The results of four decades of economic reforms and opening up in China, the country’s approach to economic development based on structural change, and its sources of productivity growth are analyzed. Likewise, the paper examines China’s current growth potential as well as possible future transformations.
